When Your Values Get Stuck in One Place

A senior leader I work with recently described feeling stuck after being sidelined from a project he cared about.

As we talked, it became clear that the project wasn’t just a project. It was carrying a lot. Mastery. Craftsmanship. Elegance. Depth of understanding. Intellectual rigor.

At one point I said something like: “You already know what matters to you. The question may not be whether these values matter, but whether this particular project is the only place they can live.”

That felt like the useful distinction.

A lot of high performers fuse their identity and values with a specific role, company, or initiative. So when access to that role narrows, it can feel not just professionally disappointing, but personally disorienting.

One of the moves in coaching is helping someone separate the underlying value from the strategy through which it has been expressed. That is also a core idea in Nonviolent Communication: needs can have many strategies. We suffer when we mistake one particular strategy for the need itself.

The work is not abandoning your values. It is realizing they may be more portable than you thought.
